Enterprise Knowledge Diffusion——The Moderating Role of Network
Experience
Abstract
In the context of open innovation, innovative ideas and knowledge can flow freely.
Knowledge diffusion refers to knowledge sharing, interaction and exchange, that is, the
process of knowledge transfer or spillover from producers (knowledge sources) to users
(knowledge receivers). It not only plays an important role in external enterprises' innovation
and regional economic development but also brings important value to the original enterprises.
Enterprises can use conscious and strategic knowledge outflow and unconscious knowledge
spillover processes to obtain economic and non-economic benefits, which is significant to
guide enterprises' outbound open innovation practices comprehensively. Therefore, It is
particularly important to clarify the factors affecting knowledge diffusion and the mechanism
of factors.
Based on resource-based theory and social network theory, this paper mainly focuses on
the relationship between the state and behaviour characteristics of enterprises in the global
innovation network and knowledge diffusion in the open innovation environment, and
constructs a theoretical framework of research on the relationship between enterprise network
embeddedness, innovation ability, network experience and knowledge diffusion. This paper
mainly explores the impact of network embeddedness on knowledge diffusion, the mediating
role of innovation ability, and how network experience moderates the impact of different
network embeddedness on enterprise innovation ability and knowledge diffusion. Given the
theoretical research framework, this paper takes the new energy vehicle industry as the
research sample, uses the Derwent Innovation Index database as the patent data source to
retrieve thepatent cooperation andcitation data from2001 to 2020,and uses the
patentometrics to measure the variables. Then, this paper uses Ucinet software to analyze the
network characteristics of the global innovation network of enterprises in the new energy
vehicle industry at different time stages and applies the negative binomial model and
robustness test to carry out the empirical test. The research results show that: Both structural
embeddedness and relational embeddedness have positive impacts on enterprise knowledge
diffusion, and structural embeddedness and relational embeddedness also have positive
impacts on enterprise innovation ability; The research reveals the partial mediating effect of
innovation ability between network embeddedness and knowledge diffusion; The study

further introduces network experience and finds that network experience reduces the positive
impact of structural embeddedness and relational embeddedness on knowledge diffusion but
has no significant moderating effect on the positive impact of structural embeddedness and
relational embeddedness on innovation ability. The results ofthis study contribute to
theoretical research on knowledge diffusion and provide theoretical support for organizations
to formulate outbound open innovation strategies.
