Common types of mobile wallets
Bank-led: Commonly provided by retail (i.e., consumer-facing) banks. Most require wallet
users to have an account (checking/debit or credit). The wallets are enabled via mobile apps for
smartphones and text messages for feature phones. Examples include Pockets by ANZ Mobile
Pay (Australia), Chase Pay (US), Danske Bank MobilePay (Denmark) and ICICI Bank (India).
Telco-led:Provided by wireless operators. Such wallets usually don’t require that users have a
formal bank account but might be done in conjunction with a financial product like a prepaid
card, issued through a partnership with a bank or card company. Examples include Oi Carteira
(Brazil), SafaricomM-Pesa(Kenya) and TelcelTransfer (Mexico).
Network/brand: A private label or closed-loop mobile wallet that is exclusive to a retailer, app,
social network or other type of network. These wallets can often be funded with traditional
sources like credit, debit and checking accounts, as well gift cards and alternative sources.
Examples include Alipay, CVS Pay, Klarna, LevelUp, PayPal and Walmart Pay.
Handset: Mobile wallets that are integrated with both the mobile operating system and
hardware on a mobile handset, including NFC chips and other technology. These wallets link to
formal credit and debit card accounts, and can be used in-app and in-store (where accepted).
Examples include Android Pay, Apple Pay, Microsoft Wallet, Samsung Pay and Xiaomi’s MiPay.
The expansion of major handset-based
mobile wallets ramped up in 2016
