CancerStatistics,2017 RebeccaL.Siegel,MPH1;KimberlyD.Miller,MPH2;AhmedinJemal,DVM,PhD3 Abstract:Eachyear,theAmericanCancerSocietyestimatesthenumbersofnewcan- cercasesanddeathsthatwilloccurintheUnitedStatesinthecurrentyearandcom- pilesthemostrecentdataoncancerincidence,mortality,andsurvival.Incidencedata werecollectedbytheSurveillance,Epidemiology,andEndResultsProgram;theNational ProgramofCancerRegistries;andtheNorthAmericanAssociationofCentralCancer Registries.MortalitydatawerecollectedbytheNationalCenterforHealthStatistics.In 2017,1,688,780newcancercasesand600,920cancerdeathsareprojectedtooccur intheUnitedStates.Forallsitescombined,thecancerincidencerateis20%higherin menthaninwomen,whilethecancerdeathrateis40%higher.However,sexdisparities varybycancertype.Forexample,thyroidcancerincidenceratesare3-foldhigherin womenthaninmen(21vs7per100,000population),despiteequivalentdeathrates (0.5per100,000population),largelyreflectingsexdifferencesinthe°epidemicofdiag- nosis.±Overthepastdecadeofavailabledata,theoverallcancerincidencerate(2004- 2013)wasstableinwomenanddeclinedbyapproximately2%annuallyinmen,whilethe cancerdeathrate(2005-2014)declinedbyabout1.5%annuallyinbothmenandwomen. From1991to2014,theoverallcancerdeathratedropped25%,translatingtoapproxi- mately2,143,200fewercancerdeathsthanwouldhavebeenexpectedifdeathrates hadremainedattheirpeak.Althoughthecancerdeathratewas15%higherinblacks thaninwhitesin2014,increasingaccesstocareasaresultofthePatientProtection andAffordableCareActmayexpeditethenarrowingracialgap;from2010to2015,the proportionofblackswhowereuninsuredhalved,from21%to11%,asitdidforHispanics (31%to16%).GainsincoveragefortraditionallyunderservedAmericanswillfacilitatethe broaderapplicationofexistingcancercontrolknowledgeacrosseverysegmentofthe population.CACancerJClin2017;67:7¨C30.VC2017AmericanCancerSociety.
